Go behind the scenes of the installation of I Look for the Sky at the Asian Art Museum with artist Zheng Chongbin, Installation Manager Chris Dadzitis, and preparator Mel Ramirez. Using 40-foot lifts, custom–made clamps, and lots of ingenuity, Zheng and a team of preparators suspended a custom framing system and dozens of enormous scrim and acrylic panels in Bogart Court. The panels vary in transparency and pattern, directing the flow of natural light and manipulating visual sightlines to create a novel spatial experience. Installed in a space not built for art or rigging, I Look for the Sky came with a host of engineering challenges that pushed everyone on the team to think creatively. This major installation in the museum’s 5,000 square–foot glass-enclosed atrium may pave the way for future innovative uses of this space.
This installation is a part of the Asian American Experience, which is made possible with the generous support of Glen S. and Sakie T. Fukushima, an anonymous donor in memory of Ambassador and Mrs. Sampson Shen, and Claudine Cheng.
