Elings Park Transformation: Jan 16, Afternoon

Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is transforming a one-acre plot in Elings Park to a native plant habitat – and we need your help!

AFTERNOON SHIFT: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Details

Beginning in fall of 2023 and running three years, this restoration project concentrates California-native plants within a one-acre plot and compares the abundance, diversity, and composition of plant and animal life before and after the transformation. To achieve this work, we’re seeking volunteers to help clear invasive plant species, prepare the site for plantings, plant our projected 1,400 plants, and monitor the progress along the way through varied scientific methods.

Working in partnership with Elings Park and Channel Islands Restoration, volunteer opportunities will evolve as the project continues.

Directions

When you arrive at the entrance gate, please let the attendant know that you’re here for the Elings Park Restoration with the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. If there is no attendant, don’t worry—just continue straight up the driveway to the parking lot by the Elings Park office.

At the far end of this parking lot, you’ll see a trailhead with a map nearby. The trail is called the Valerio Trail and it will be marked with brightly colored landscaping flags to guide you to the restoration area at the top of the hill. Once you reach the area, look for trucks parked nearby, along with a table for volunteer check-in and refreshments.

Thank you for being part of this important project!

Note

We recommend bringing a refillable water bottle and please be sure to dress for the weather!
